My Lazy American Students

The linked article is now required beginning-of-the-semester reading for all of my college students.

Students - stop projecting your personal problems onto your instructors. Approach your instructors with issues that he/she can help you with academically. Take your personal problems to a Counselor. Counselors are provided on every campus - take advantage of that resource.

The community college environment is more supportive than that of any university. However, you must earn your grades and academic status just as you would at any other college or university.

This semester will be a semester of change. I will separate my professional relationships from my personal relationships. If you are my student, our relationship is purely professional.

This does not mean that I am uncaring - it means that I can serve you best by being your instructor and not your personal confidant.

Earn your academic respect. College is a privilege and not a right. Treat it as such.

Presto! A change in semantics will improve SC schools!

Update 01.06.09: The Voice for School Choice elaborates on an editorial from the The Spartanburg Herald Journal related to this issue.

According to State Senator John Matthews, D-Bowman a simple change in the state’s mission statement regarding education will improve student achievement in South Carolina.

Today, I am serving Vieux-Boulogne as the appetizer to accompany this post.

Enjoy and your comments are greatly appreciated.

Student Loans - Damned if you do, Damned if you don't...

This is not South Carolina specific and defaults on student loans are nothing new - but with the financial crisis and job crunch will there be a rise in risk and a loss in student opportunity?
